Un verrou du Jura
On 7 April 1803, Toussaint Louverture died in a cell at the Château de Joux, denied medical care after eight months of solitary confinement. Two centuries later, the fortress overlooking the cluse de Pontarlier in the Doubs remains open year-round and is the focus of a restoration programme running from 2020 to 2030. Behind this name linked to the fight against slavery, there also lies a thousand-year-old site, reshaped by Vauban and later by the future Marshal Joffre.
