Château de Vitré: the major project to save its gatehouse

For eight centuries, the gatehouse of Vitré Castle has guarded the western entrance to this fortified town on the Brittany Marches. In 2026, this fortified gate itself enters a major restoration project: the City of Vitré and the Vitré Patrimoine association, with the support of the Fondation du patrimoine, have just launched a twelve-month programme to stabilise a structure whose structural condition is deemed alarming. Selected among the 2026 Loto du patrimoine departmental projects, this project goes far beyond mere repointing: it addresses the very essence of what makes Vitré one of Brittany’s best-preserved medieval fortresses.
