By late November, English castles adjust their opening hours. When darkness falls around 4pm, their grounds light up and courtyards fill with the scent of mulled wine. From Kent to the Cotswolds, via the Midlands and the Peak District, five stately homes have unveiled their festive 2026 line-up: illuminated trails, an ice rink beneath a 14th-century tower, an artisan market in a medieval manor, and a performance of The Nutcracker in the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Here’s what awaits you, with dates included, plus everything you need to know before booking.

Two Tudor queens and a billionaire builder

Anne Boleyn

vers 1501-1536

Daughter of Thomas Boleyn, she grew up at Hever, purchased in 1462 by her great-grandfather Sir Geoffrey Boleyn. Second wife of Henry VIII and mother of the future Elizabeth I, she was executed in 1536. After her family’s downfall, Hever reverted to the Crown then to Anne of Cleves, Henry’s fourth wife, who kept it until 1557.

Catherine Parr

1512-1548

Sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, she remarried after the king’s death to Thomas Seymour, who was granted Sudeley in 1547. She moved there with the young Jane Grey and died in September 1548, days after giving birth to a daughter. Her tomb in St Mary’s Church makes Sudeley the only private castle in England where a queen is buried.

William Waldorf Astor

1848-1919

Heir to a vast New York fortune who settled in England, he bought Hever in 1903 and immediately funded an extensive restoration: a neo-Tudor cottage village for his guests, linked to the castle by a covered bridge, an Italian garden populated with antique statues and a lake landscaped between 1903 and 1908.
