Christmas in the Land of Châteaux 2026: five châteaux in Touraine dressed for the festive season, from Chenonceau to Chinon fortress

From 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, seven châteaux in Touraine celebrate the tenth anniversary of Christmas in the Land of Châteaux. Indre-et-Loire, 28 novembre 2026 - 3 janvier 2027

On Saturday 28 November 2026, seven châteaux in Indre-et-Loire will open their doors together for Christmas. This year marks the tenth edition of Christmas in the Land of Châteaux, running until Sunday 3 January 2027. The concept remains unchanged: each site selects a theme and transforms its rooms without altering the usual visitor route. Chenonceau takes visitors on a tour of global traditions, Amboise entrusts its decorations to the animals of the courtyard, Azay-le-Rideau sets the tables with haute pâtisserie, Villandry welcomes the forest indoors, Langeais fills its rooms with music, Loches tells the story of Beauty and the Beast, and Chinon summons the fairies. We have selected five of these châteaux because their festive displays resonate with their own histories, and we have compiled the dates for the evening openings, spread across seven evenings in December.

Château de Chenonceau

Le château de Chenonceau est un château de la Loire situé en Touraine, sur la commune de Chenonceaux, dans le département d'Indre-et-Loire en région Centre-Val de Loire. Chenonceau avec sa célèbre galerie à deux étages qui domine le Cher est l'un des fleurons de l'architecture du Val de Loire. Ses emprunts à l'Italie et ses caractéristiques françaises sont clairement perceptibles. Chenonceau est construit, aménagé et transformé par des femmes très différentes de par leur tempérament. Il est édifié par Katherine Briçonnet en 1513, enrichi dès 1547 par Diane de Poitiers, qui le reçoit en cadeau d'Henri II, et agrandi sous Catherine de Médicis. Il devient un lieu de recueillement avec « la reine blanche », Louise de Lorraine, puis il est sauvegardé par Louise Dupin au cours de la Révolution française et enfin, métamorphosé par Madame Pelouze. De par le grand nombre de personnalités féminines qui en ont eu la charge, il est surnommé « le château des Dames ». Le domaine privé de Chenonceau appartient à la famille Menier depuis 1913 et il est ouvert à la visite. Le château est classé au titre des monuments historiques depuis son inscription sur la liste de 1840 et le parc par arrêté en date du 7 novembre 1962. L'édifice et son environnement sont intégrés au Val de Loire, classé au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco, depuis le 9 juillet 2017.

Château de Loches

Le château de Loches est un ancien château fort, du premier tiers du XIe siècle, qui se dresse dans le Val de Loire, sur la commune française de Loches dans le département d'Indre-et-Loire, en région Centre-Val de Loire, au cœur de la cité royale bâtie sur un éperon rocheux ceinturée d'une muraille. Cette Cité comprend, outre le donjon, le logis royal et la collégiale Saint-Ours. Le château fait l'objet d'une protection partielle au titre des monuments historiques.
