Endangered heritage: the race for funding to secure the keep of Salignac Castle in the Dordogne

At Salignac, the cracked keep opens its restricted areas to the public

In the Dordogne, Salignac Castle is seeking €1.5 million to secure its cracked Romanesque keep. For Heritage Open Days, two spaces usually closed to visitors will be opened to the public.

In Salignac-Eyvigues, Dordogne, the 11th-century Romanesque keep of Salignac Castle is described as "extremely fragile" by its owners: evolving cracks threaten its stability, as do certain masonry and roofing of the neighbouring wings. To secure the entire site, the family restoring the property since 2006 estimates the need at €1.5 million — funded by over 92% from their own resources, with less than 8% of the works eligible for public funding. On the occasion of European Heritage Days, 19 and 20 September 2026, two spaces usually closed to the public will exceptionally open their doors: the high terrace overlooking the medieval keep and an artillery bastion bearing witness to the site’s defensive adaptations.
