Puilaurens: the Aude fire that threatened the Cathar fortress
On 5 September 2026, a wildfire swept across 225 hectares near the Puilaurens château, newly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A tale of a blaze that proved difficult to contain.

On Saturday 5 September 2026, a wildfire broke out in Puilaurens, in the Haut Pays de Sault (Aude), just a few hundred metres from the château’s ramparts. Within hours, the blaze had spread from 150 to 225 hectares, mobilising over 330 firefighters and several aerial resources. The threatened fortress is no ordinary site: just six weeks earlier, on 26 July 2026, UNESCO had inscribed Puilaurens—alongside seven other Languedoc sites—on the World Heritage List.
