Le parcours
Between the Dordogne Valley and the Gramat causse, the north of the Lot packs a complete lesson in castle architecture into just a few kilometres. On Saturday, the fortress of Castelnau-Bretenoux and the eyrie at Autoire tell the story of medieval warfare; on Sunday, Montal and Assier reveal how, in the 1520s, two families from the Quercy imported Italian Renaissance style far from the Loire Valley. This two-day itinerary is designed to be driven at a leisurely pace, appealing to both stonework enthusiasts and families seeking a mix of visits and short walks. All three major sites are managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, which simplifies ticketing but means you should check opening days outside the main season before setting off.
From siege to spectacle
Two days, four stops, and a simple progression: we begin with what protects, we end with what impresses. Castelnau-Bretenoux and Autoire embody defence; Montal and Assier, the ostentation of Renaissance elites.

Day by day
The itinerary
Day 1, morning — Castelnau-Bretenoux
Start with the fortress at Prudhomat, the most imposing in the Quercy: triple ramparts, triangular layout and rooms refurnished by the tenor Jean Mouliérat. Allow the whole morning.
Day 1, afternoon — Autoire and the château des Anglais
Head to the village of Autoire, then hike up to the semi-troglodytic stronghold clinging beneath the cliff. Access is only on foot, about 30 minutes according to the trail guide.
Day 2, morning — Montal
Visit the château de Montal, on the outskirts of Saint-Céré: Renaissance courtyard with sculptures, family busts and a straight Italian-style staircase.
Day 2, afternoon — Assier
Drive down to the causse to Assier, the last surviving wing of Galiot de Genouillac’s palace, and round off with the village church, which also bears his emblems.
