Anjou: two rarely opened châteaux unveiled for Heritage Open Days

The château de Chanzeaux and the château de la Montchevalleraie, in Maine-et-Loire, have exceptionally opened their doors for Heritage Open Days 2026, offering guided tours and remarkable parks.

In two communes in Maine-et-Loire, some forty kilometres apart, two châteaux that are usually closed to the public threw open their gates for a weekend. The château de Chanzeaux, remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in the 19th century, and the château de la Montchevalleraie, built from 1780 near Segré, offered guided tours on 19 and 20 September 2026 as part of European Heritage Days.

At Chanzeaux, the park designed by the comte de Choulot complements a château whose current silhouette owes everything to a 19th-century remodelling, undertaken after the damage suffered during the revolutionary unrest of 1794.

La Montchevalleraie, a more discreet estate

Less well known than the grand Loire châteaux, this six-hectare estate built from 1780 retains an English-style garden, an orchard and a pond, opened for the occasion alongside the manor house.

The two tours were offered on the same dates, with no organised route between the two sites: visitors were free to plan their own Anjou weekend, between Chanzeaux south of Cholet and la Montchevalleraie to the north, near Segré.
