Fort Queyras: £500,000 from the Loto du Patrimoine for the 'giant of stone' in the Hautes-Alpes

Perched at 1,390 metres above sea level, Fort Queyras receives the maximum grant from the 2026 Loto du Patrimoine: £500,000 to restore its eastern ramparts, roof and the Governor’s Pavilion, eroded by freeze-thaw cycles exacerbated by climate change.

At 1,390 metres above sea level in the Queyras, freeze-thaw cycles have never been more destructive to the stones of this 13th-century fortress, remodelled by Vauban. Climate change is intensifying this phenomenon, further weakening the site’s ramparts and roofs each winter. Good news for its owners: Fort Queyras has just been designated an emblematic site in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region for the 2026 Loto du Patrimoine, with a £500,000 grant—the maximum amount awarded by the Mission Patrimoine. This will fund a new phase of works extending until October 2027.
