Restoration of the royal castle of Senlis, cradle of the Capetians, thanks to the 2026 Heritage Lottery
Senlis: the castle where Hugh Capet was elected finally gets its restoration
Selected by the 2026 Heritage Lottery, the royal castle of Senlis—where Hugh Capet was elected king in 987—will undergo a three-phase stabilisation project to save its ruins in the Oise, threatened by erosion.

The royal castle of Senlis, in the Oise department, has just been selected by the 2026 Heritage Mission: a grant that will enable an emergency stabilisation project to be launched at a site where French history pivoted twice—in 987 with the election of Hugh Capet, and in the 13th century as a residence of Saint Louis. Today reduced to ruins threatened by cracks and water infiltration, the monument—listed since 1862—must regain safe access for visitors.
